Comparison with Hornetsecurity

US corporation or German data sovereignty?

With the acquisition of Hornetsecurity by the US corporation Proofpoint, a key question has resurfaced for many organizations: Where is my sensitive Microsoft 365 data stored, and who ultimately has access to it?

Particularly in the context of GDPR, NIS2, KRITIS, and increasing compliance requirements, data sovereignty is becoming a decisive criterion when selecting a backup solution. As a German company, we consistently guarantee what is essential for many organizations today: hosting, processing, and storage of your data exclusively in certified data centers located in Germany. No US parent company, no Cloud Act, and no legal grey areas. To provide a well-founded basis for decision-making, we have subjected our proprietary backup solution to a fair, objective, and practical comparison with Hornetsecurity’s solution.

In addition to functionality and technology, service quality, licensing models, and data control also play an important role in choosing the right Microsoft 365 backup solution. Both providers offer German-speaking support, regular updates, and additional archiving options.
However, differences become apparent in the management of inactive Microsoft Teams and SharePoint Online data, testing options, as well as in sales structure and corporate headquarters. While OCC, as a German manufacturer, offers a free trial period and enables targeted retention of inactive Microsoft 365 data, these features are not available with Hornetsecurity, and licensing is handled exclusively through partners.
